Zigeuner, Cigány, and Gitano: Tracing the Roots of a Misunderstood Identity

The names Zigeuner, Cigány, and Gitano all trace their origin back to the ancient Sanskrit language. They are derived from the compound word atini-gaṇita, meaning highly skilled in mathematics. Through mispronunciation over time, this term morphed into forms like tsigan, tigan, zingaro, zigeuner, and gitana—yet all retain the same core meaning: mathematics.

Another name used by the Phoenicians is Roma, which also finds its roots in Sanskrit—from Ra-Ma. The word Ra carries layered meanings: it translates to fire (as in the myth of Prometheus, who “stole fire from the gods”), and it also refers to the y-axis—one of the three axes in a three-dimensional coordinate system. When combined with Ma (meaning bound or measure), Ra-Ma describes the origin of life itself: the initial spark, the divine measure. This same name appears in the Bible as Rama or Ramah, meaning “an elevated place” (e.g., Jeremiah 31:15; Matthew 2:18).

In this context, Sanskrit becomes the language of Ra-Ma, or the language of YHVH—the one who expanded into the universe. The “elevated spot” mentioned in sacred texts is symbolic of zero, which also appears in the Tarot as The Fool. Those who misappropriated this wisdom once mocked zero, believing it to represent emptiness. But zero is not void—it holds the trinity: in religion, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This foundational misunderstanding led them to label “The Fool” as such, unaware they were mocking the very source of life.

The Romani people, bearers of this ancient wisdom, were first enslaved as early as 2550–2490 BCE, taken across regions for forced labor. Among the earliest to enslave them were the Persians, followed by the Romans, who scattered them throughout Europe. However, the first betrayal came from the Spartans. Interestingly, the Sanskrit word Spardhā means “emulators”—a fitting label, as the Spartans adopted and distorted the Phoenician way of life.

Later, Phoenicians were captured alongside Greeks by Attila the Hun and brought to the Hungarian plains, hidden from the world and branded falsely as “Gypsy thieves.” In reality, it was their civilization that had been stolen, their knowledge looted, their cities razed. Even that wasn’t enough—they were kept in ignorance, severed from their roots, and made to forget that their native tongue was Sanskrit.

From 2009 to 2017, a silent genocide swept through Europe. Many Romani people were erased, and in their place now stand identity thieves—wielding forged documents and adopting the names of the dead. Today, much of Europe operates under the grip of criminal networks: corruption, trafficking, forced labor, and exploitation run rampant.

It’s important to note: the word Gypsy carries an entirely different meaning than Zigeuner.

The term Gypsy emerged in England, when a group sought asylum claiming they were from “Little Egypt”—presenting forged pilgrim documents to ensure safe travel across Europe. Little Egypt likely referred to Macedonia, which had once ruled over Egypt. Thus, Gypsy came to signify someone from Macedonia. Whether the story is factual or a convenient fabrication remains uncertain—like much of history.
